John William Serbus was born on 22 September 1866 in Brown County, Minnesota, to Jan and Rosile Brtek Serbus. John William served in World War I. On 18 June 1889, John was united in marriage to Mary Ann Kojetin, the daughter of Wencel and Anna Macholda Kojetin. John and Mary were married in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bechyn. After their marriage, they lived on a farm in Henryville Township where they farmed for 46 years. They moved to Olivia, Minnesota, in 1930. John William made his home with the James Serbus family for the six years prior to his death and then moved to the Geselle Nursing Home a month before he died. His wife, Mary Ann Kojetin Serbus, died on 09 May 1944. John William Serbus, Sr., died on Monday, 02 January 1961, at the Geselle Nursing Home. The funeral service for John William was held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia, Minnesota, at 10:00 a.m., on 05 January 1961. John was survived by seven children, Rose (Michael) Goblish, Anna (Michael) Frank, James, William, John E., Matthew, and Gertrude (Frank) Bartes. The entire family lived in the Olivia community. Two daughters, Mary Hosek and Blanche Serbus, preceded him in death. Additional survivors included 40 grandchildren, 107 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. Two surviving brothers were Henry Serbus of Olivia and Adolph Serbus of St. Paul. John William Serbus, Sr., was buried next to his wife, Mary Ann Serbus, in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Pallbearers were his grandsons, William, John, James, Lloyd, and Frank Serbus, and John E. Goblish.
