Bio
Frank M. (Franz) Serbus was born on 07 August 1864, in quarantine on a ship, while his parents, Jan (John) and Rosile Brtek Serbus, were coming to America. Frank’s parents originally settled in Shakopee, Minnesota. In 1865, they moved to Belle Plaine Township, Brown County, Minnesota, where they homesteaded on 61 acres of land. In 1884, the family moved to Henryville Township, Renville County. Frank M. Serbus remained at home until 1888, when he bought 160 acres of his father’s farm, in section 26 of Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota. He later purchased 240 more acres in Section 26. Two acres were set out in fruit trees and 50 acres were planted with timothy and clover. Frank raised Red Poll cattle and O.I.C. hogs and sold one car of stock each year. Frank served as the Clerk of School District #12 for 27 years and for seven or more years, has been a member of the Henryville Township Board where he served as Board Chairman for three of those years. Frank was a stockholder in the Farmers’ Elevators at Morton and North Redwood, and in the New State Bank at Morton. On 10 July 1888, Frank M. Serbus married Mary Zetah (Zeta), in Bird Island, Renville County, Minnesota. Mary was born on 28 February 1862 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to Frank and Annie Zeta. Frank and Mary Zetah Serbus raised eight children. Adolph was born 22 July 1899; Kate was born 31 December 1891; Joseph was born on 25 September 1892; Lucy was born 20 March 1897; Mary was born 11 March 1898; Frank was born 20 August 1902; Theodore was born 19 August 1904; and, Edward was born 03 February 1906. Frank and Mary had three children who died in infancy. Frank M. Serbus died on Wednesday, 25 June 1943, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. He had been ailing for the previous three months and had been hospitalized for the previous six weeks. Frank’s wife, Mary Zetah Serbus, died on 28 February 1926 in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota. The funeral service for Frank was held on Saturday, 28 June, at 9:00 a.m. from St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia, Minnesota. Frank was buried next to his wife, Mary, in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Frank’s grandsons served as pallbearers.
