Bio

James Joseph “Jim” Serbus was born on 05 September 1894, in Renville County, Minnesota, to John William and Mary Kojetin Serbus. Jim married Frances Rose Hlavinka in Scappoose, Oregon, on 07 September 1926. James and Frances raised five children, John Francis, James Albert, Lloyd Joe, Martha Marie, and Rita Frances. The family farmed south of Olivia until Jim retired in 1955 when they moved to Olivia. James was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. James Joseph’s wife, Frances Rose Hlavinka Serbus, died on 05 December 1960, in Brown County, Minnesota. In 1963, James married Mary Lippert Olson. James Joseph “Jim” Serbus died at the age of 84, on Sunday morning, 10 June 1979, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Jim was survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, John of Renville, James of Olivia, and Lloyd of North Redwood; two daughters, Martha (Eugene) Tauer of Morgan and Rita (James) Schroepfer of Olivia; 23 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and, three brothers, William H. Serbus and Matthew Serbus of Olivia and John E. Serbus of Renville. The funeral service for James was held on Wednesday, 13 June 1979, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia; the Reverend Ralph Hayden officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Pallbearers were Dennis, Donald, and James Tauer; and, Rick, Allen, Loren, Norbert, and Brian Serbus.
