Bio

Jan (John) Serbus was born in Bohemia on 15 January 1833. He and Rosile Brtek were married in Czechoslovakia where they farmed until they immigrated to the United States in 1864. Their oldest son, Frank, was born on the ship during the trip to America. The family arrived in Suffolk, New York, on 02 September 1864. Family stories say that Jan and Rosile had daughters born to them while they lived in Czechoslovakia. Sadly, these same stories say the daughters died in infancy. Rosile and Jan originally settled in Shakopee, Minnesota. In 1865, they moved to Belle Plaine Township, Brown County, Minnesota, where they homesteaded on 61 acres of land. Jan and Rosile had seven sons, Frank M. (Franz), John William, William F. (Vilem), Joseph Paul, Henry Peter, Anton Joseph, and Adolph John Serbus. Jan wanted to move to Bechyn, Minnesota, so their seven sons could marry Bohemian women; so, they sold the land in Brown County. The family had to cross the Minnesota River to get to Renville County. The Serbus brothers herded 40 head of cattle and "loose" horses during the move in their wagon to Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, where Jan and Rosile purchased 320 acres of farmland. Their son, Henry, later took over this farm. Jan Serbus died on 12 December 1895, the same year as his son, William. Jan's wife, Rosile, died on 26 August 1912. Both were buried next to their son, William Serbus, in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota.
