Matthew William “Matt” Serbus was born on 24 February 1904, in the family farm house in Henryville Township near Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota, to John William and Mary Ann Kojetin Serbus. He graduated from Olivia High School in 1924. Matthew married Mary Rose Rejsek on 25 October 1938, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. Matt and Mary farmed the family farm, where Matt was born, until 1971; when they retired and moved to Olivia. They both lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. During his younger years, Matt was a School Board Member for School District #12 and he was a trustee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. Matthew William “Matt” Serbus, died at the age of 84, on Tuesday morning, 01 November 1988, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia (Bud) Welsh of Bird Island, Margaret (Tony) Kosak and Mary (Jerry) Schroepfer of Olivia, and Leona (Vernon) Ewer of Phoenix, Arizona; sons and daughters-in-law, Wallace (Karen) Serbus and Larry (Sue) Serbus of Olivia, and Steve (Cheryl) Serbus of New Ulm; 22 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. Matt was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, three brothers, one grandchild, and one great grandchild. Friends said their final farewells to Matt on Thursday, 03 November, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Dirks Funeral Home in Olivia. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Matthew William Serbus on Friday, 04 November at 1:00 p.m., at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia; Father Peter Nosbush officiated. Burial followed in the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota.
