Bio
Joseph Peter Serbus was born on 29 October 1871, to Jan (John) and Rosile (Rose) Brtek Serbus, in Sleepy Eye, Brown County, Minnesota. When Joseph Peter was 12 years old, he moved with his family to Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota. Joseph married Mary Ann Krell, the daughter of Jacob and Josephine Yita (Zetah) Krell, on 13 February 1896, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn, Minnesota. They lived in Bechyn for many where he operated a store and served as the first Postmaster of Bechyn. In 1910, Joseph moved his family to Detroit Lakes where he worked in real estate. Joseph Peter Serbus died at his home in Detroit Lakes, Becker County, Minnesota, on 25 February 1955. He was 84 years old and had been ailing for the previous two years. The funeral service for Joseph was held in Detroit Lakes and burial followed in the Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery in Renville, Renville County, Minnesota. Joseph Peter was survived by his daughters, Grace Serbus Setzer from Seattle, Washington, and Rose Marie Serbus Clancy of Portland, Oregon. Other survivors included his two grandsons in Seattle; his brothers Henry and John Serbus of Olivia, Adolph Serbus of St. Paul, and Anton Serbus of Portland, Oregon.
