John Edward Serbus was born on 11 September 1899, to John William and Mary Ann (Kojetin) Serbus. He attended School District #12 in Renville County. On 16 September 1930, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Hosek in Pukwana, South Dakota. Following their marriage, they lived south of Olivia. In 1934, they moved to a farm south of Danube in Flora Township and in 1963, they moved to Renville. Following the death of his wife, Mary Ann Hosek Serbus, on 29 May 1979, John was a resident of the Olivia Healthcare Center in Olivia. In August 1979, he went to live with his son, Joseph L. Serbus, for two and one-half years. Since 1981, he had been living with his daughter and her husband, Donald and Veronica Frank. His death occurred on 22 February 1986 at home, at the age of 86. John Edward Serbus, Sr., was survived by three daughters, Mary Ann (Steve) Schmoll of Olivia, Mildred (Robert) Hagen of Bird Island, and Veronica (Donald) Frank; two sons, Joseph L. of Foreston and Francis of Danube; two brothers, William and Matthew, both of Olivia; 26 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, five children, five sisters, and a brother. The funeral service for John was held on Tuesday, 25 February 1986, at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville; Father Michael O’Conner and Father Peter Nosbush officiated. Music was provided by organist, Sandra Frank, and the Holy Redeemer Choir. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Pallbearers were Tom Hagen, Jerry Hagen, Tony Schmoll, Pat Schmoll, Duane Frank, and Joe Serbus, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Serbus, John Serbus, Lloyd Serbus, Wallace Serbus, Jerry Wohlman, and Charles Ridl.
