Harold Daniel “Harry” Serbus was born on 27 November 1942 to Mary (Hosek) and John Edward Serbus, Sr., in Renville County, Minnesota. Harry attended Danube High School and was engaged in farming at home at the time of his death. Harold Daniel “Harry” Serbus died, at the age of 22, from injuries suffered in an accident that occurred at about 11:20 p.m., on Thursday, 16 July 1964. Harry was driving a motor scooter which was struck by a hit-run driver. The mishap occurred about eight miles south of Danube on Renville County Road 4, about 1,000 feet from the intersection of County Road 1. Harry had been visiting with the Lloyd and Delores Serbus family and was about two miles from their farm when the accident occurred. Harry was taken to the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota, where he died at 1:15 a.m. on Friday, 17 July 1964. His death was attributed to a broken pelvis and brain hemorrhage. He never regained consciousness. A widespread alert was sent out to all surrounding sheriffs’ offices and police departments by the Renville County Sheriff, Fred Johnson, who investigated the accident. The only clue that Sheriff Johnson had to work with was a broken headlight. Harry was survived by his parents; three brothers, Clarence at home, Joseph of Minneapolis, and Francis of Blomkest; and, three sisters, Veronica at home, Mary Ann (Steve) Schmoll of Bird Island, and Mildred (Robert) Hagen of Bird Island. Harry’s brothers, John Edward, Jr., and Gilbert Benjamin, and a sister, Barbara Jane, preceded him in death. The funeral service for Harry was held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, 20 July 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Pall bearers were Clarence Hosek, Lloyd Serbus, John Serbus, Donald Haubrich, Wallace Serbus, and Kenneth Ridl.
