Bio

Mildred Frances “Millie” Serbus was born on 12 September 1934 to Mary (Hosek) and John Edward Serbus, Sr., in Flora Township, Renville County, Minnesota. Millie attended a country school near her home and then went to Danube High School. Mildred married Robert Carl “Bob” Hagen on 16 November 1955 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Robert was born on 13 February 1932 in rural Renville County, Minnesota. Millie and Bob had five children. They farmed south of Bird Island until the time of Millie’s death. Millie was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary in Bird Island, Minnesota. Mildred Frances “Millie” Serbus Hagen died at her home, at the age of 51, on 20 August 1986, in Bird Island, Renville County, Minnesota. Mildred was survived by her husband, Robert; sons, Thomas, Jeffery, and Ronald of Bird Island and Jerry of Willmar; daughter, Deborah Johnson of Chester, Montana; granddaughters, Shelly Hagen, Shawna and Kimberly Hagen, and Desiree Johnson; sisters, Mary Ann Schmoll and Veronica Kathleen Frank; and, brothers, Joseph Leonard and Francis James Serbus. Mildred Frances was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers and sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, 22 August 1986, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island. Father Harry Behan was the celebrant. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bird Island, Renville County, Minnesota. Pallbearers were nephews, Pat and Bernie Schmoll, Duane Frank, Bob Kopel, Mike Scholl, and Chuck Hagen. Organist and song leader was Helen Harazin. Altar boys were Jeff Squibb, and Bill and Tim Kopel. Lector was Helen Kopel. Offertory gifts were carried by granddaughters, Shelly and Shawna Hagen, and nieces, Carolyn Scholl, Deanne Frank, and Cheryl Serbus.
