Bio

James Albert “Jim” Serbus was born on 08 November 1929, on the family farm in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to James Joseph and Frances Rose Hlavinka Serbus. James attended District #12 Country School in Henryville Township and then helped his family on the farm. Jim served in the United States Army, during the Korean War from 18 March 1953 to 10 March 1955, where he served in Germany for one and one-half years. James was united in marriage to Marion Gloria Revier on 28 July 1953, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. They lived in Alexandria, Virginia, for several months prior to his military tour in Germany. After James was discharged from the Army, he returned to operate the family farm until his death. While farming he sold Vigertone Feed for 35 years. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and a former 4-H leader. His hobbies included trapping, playing cards, doing jigsaw puzzles, collecting scrap metal, visiting casinos, and watching the Vikings and Twins play. James Albert “Jim” Serbus died, at the age of 70, on Thursday, 09 March 2000, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. His death was caused from helping a cow give birth. James was survived by his wife, Marion; son, Loren (Julie) Serbus of Olivia, three daughters, Doreen (John) Jensen of Redwood Falls, Colleen (Bryan) Johnson of Kasson, and Maureen (Brad) Mitchell of Sacred Heart; daughter-in-law, Nancy Serbus of Olivia; two brothers, John (Louisa) Serbus of Olivia, and Lloyd (Delores) Serbus of Redwood Falls; two sisters, Martha (Eugene) Tauer and Rita (Jim) Schroepfer of Olivia; 14 grandchildren, Jason, Jessie, Jennifer, Nathan, Scott, Tori, Mackenzie, Jordan, Taylor, Courtney, Heather, Brandon, Donavon and Amber; and several nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents; son, Allen, granddaughter, Elizabeth; and grandson, Ryan. The Funeral Service for Jim was held on Monday, 13 March 2000, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Father Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial followed in the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Jim’s grandchildren were pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
