Bio
Maria A. “Mary” Serbus was born on 11 March 1899 in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to Frank M. and Mary Zetah Serbus. Mary attended School District #12 and she lived in Renville County all of her life. On 18 October 1921, Mary and John Joseph Malecek, the son of John and Mary Flicek Malecek, were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. They farmed in Henryville Township where Mary was active in the Altar Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. In 1951, they moved to a farm near Beaver Falls. After they retired from farming in 1960, they continued to live on the farm in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County. Mary Malecek had a heart condition for several years. She had a heart attack while she was in the doctor’s office on Wednesday, 05 August 1964, and was rushed to the Redwood County Hospital. She died an hour later, at about 2:00 p.m. Maria A. “Mary” Serbus Malecek was survived by her husband, John Joseph; their seven children, John, Jr., of Minneapolis, Rose at home, Angie (Ralph) Scharfencamp of Franklin, Jerome of Morgan, Bernard of Redwood Falls, Marjorie (Fred) Hartmann of Mahnomen, and Regina (Elroy) Kosek of Sleepy Eye. One daughter died in infancy. Also surviving were 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy (Frank) Dolezal of Olivia and Katie (Martin) Tersteeg of Bird Island; and five brothers, Adolph and Edward Serbus of North Redwood, and Joseph, Frank, and Ted Serbus of Olivia. Family and friends paid their final respects to Mary at the Heopner Funeral Home in Redwood Falls after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, 07 August, and the rosary was said at 9:00 p.m. The funeral service for Mary was held on Saturday, 08 August 1964, at 09:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn; Monsignor Grabowski officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Pall bearers were Joe Malecek, George Serbus, Clarence Serbus, Tom Tersteeg, Roland Serbus, and Leonard Dolezal.
