Bio

Joseph John “Joe” Serbus was born on 25 September 1892 in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to Frank and Mary (Zetah) Serbus. Joseph married Lillian Mary Dolezal, on 12 June 1917, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. Joe and Lillian farmed most of their lives in Henryville Township. They had six sons, Joseph L., Jr., Clarence, George, Bernard, Richard, and Francis Johnny; and four daughters, Lillian, Cecilia, Marie, and Veronica. Joseph retired in 1965 and moved to Olivia. He was an assessor in Henryville Township and a trustee in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn for many years. After a lingering illness, Joseph John “Joe” Serbus died at the age of 78 on Thursday, 03 June 1971, in the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Survivors included his wife; daughters, Lillian (Wayne) Haney of Olivia, Cecelia (Brainerd) Kodet of North Redwood, Marie (Joe) Pfiefer of Deer River, and Veronica (Eugene) Kittell of Spokane, Washington; sons, Clarence and Joseph, Jr., of Bird Island, George of Hector, Bernard of Arlington, and Richard of Olivia; 60 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and four brothers, Adolph of Bechyn, Theodore of Redwood Falls, Edward of North Redwood, and Frank of Olivia. Joseph was preceded in death by his infant son, Francis Johnny, and three sisters. The funeral mass for Joseph was held on Monday morning, 07 June, at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Reverend Frank Hayden and Reverend Ralph Hayden of Olivia; Reverend Leon Rotering of Franklin; Reverend A. Siebenand of Hector, and Monsignor Stanislaus Grabowski of Bechyn officiated. Al Houdek of Olivia was commentator, and grandsons, Jeff Serbus of Olivia, Mark Serbus of Hector, and Timothy Serbus of Arlington, were altar boys. Pallbearers were grandsons, Bob and Mike Serbus of Bird Island, DuWayne Haney of Olivia, Richard Haney of Willmar, Paul Pfiefer of Deer River, and Gerald Kodet of Morton. Joseph John “Joe” Serbus, Sr., was buried, on 07 June 1971, in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota.
