Bio

Rosenberg Herald, July 28, 1939: After an extended illness, death came to relieve the suffering of Mr. John Tielke, Friday, July 21 at 12:10 p.m. Mr. Tielke had been in ill health since June of last year. However, he was able to be up and about and on Good Friday, this year, was able to join in the celebration of the Lord's Supper with the congregation with which he had been worshiping. Mr. Tielke's condition continued to grow worse and he was taken to the Veterans' Hospital at Legion, where he spent seven weeks. He had the very best of attention there, but he longed to be back home with his family or near them, so he was removed to the Fort Bend Hospital in Rosenberg. He spent two weeks in the local hospital and upon his request was removed to his home, where he remained until a week before his death, when he was returned to the hospital. God had mercy upon him and relieved him of his suffering and took him from this world into His Everlasting Kingdom, where there is no pain, no suffering, no grief, no tears. Mr. Tielke was born on March 31, 1897 at Independence. He was baptized on April 16, 1897. He joined the church by confirmation on April 9, 1911. His confirmation took place in Emmanuel's Evangelical Church in Needville, under the direction of the pastor, Rev. Karl Merkel. In 1909, at the age of 12 years, Mr. Tielke came with his parents to Fort Bend County, where he lived until his death. In 1918, he went into the service of his country. Before he had an opportunity to cross over seas for active duty on foreign soil, the Armistice was signed. He spent some time in a military camp in California, but was honorably discharged on April 10, 1919, from Camp Travis. On August 26, 1919, Mr. Tielke was united in marriage to Miss Emma Oberhoff. This home was blessed with four children, and their first sorrow was the death of their first son, Lonnie Wilhelm Friedrich, who passed away at the age of 2-1/2 years. Funeral services took place Saturday afternoon. There was a brief service at the family home at 3 o'clock. Memorial services followed at Emmanuel's Evangelical Church in Needville, with Rev. F.C. Anderson officiating in the German language and Rev. A.M. Roos in English. The large floral offering and large host of friends in attendance attested to the high esteem in which this fine gentleman was held in the community in which had had made his home for so long. Interment took place in Emmanuel's Cemetery in Needville. The pallbearers were his nephews: Leroy Tielke, Bernie Tielke, Raymond Tielke, Edwin Oberhoff, Raymond Oberhoff and Ernest Oberhoff. The American Legion had charge of the services at the grave. Funeral arrangements were made by the Rosenberg Funeral Home. The deceased is survived by his grief stricken wife, Mrs. Emma Tielke; three children, Olie, Bernard and John, Jr.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm Tielke; three sisters, Mrs. Erich Bremer, Mrs. F.W. Oberhoff and Mrs. W.M. Wieghat; five brothers, Fritz, Willie, Alvin, Erich and Henry Tielke. The Herald joins a host of friends in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved loved ones.
