Bio

Born the son of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston Mathis (1846 – 1899), he at an early age married Willie Latch (1889 – 1909), the daughter of Upshur Sheriff L. A. (Daddy) Latch. She died a short time after the marriage. Later he married Hulda Ethel Thompson (1896 – 1982) and they had a daughter Clara Cliftene Mathis (1919 – 2007) later Mrs. James Lee Fleet.
