Born the son of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston (1846 – 1899), he married Mary Louella Sanders (1878 – 1953) and their children were Dalton Horman Mathis (1904 – ), Benny D. Mathis (1906 – ), Adona Mathis (1909 – ), Adona Mathis (1909 – ), and Mayron E. Mathis (1909 – ). Emmett/Emmitt was a farmer at the time he registered for the draft in World War I.
