Born the son of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston Mathis (1846 – 1899), he married Mary Louella Read (1878 – 1953) and his children were Olan Lewis Mathis (1908 – 1989), John Quay Mathis (1910 – 1974), and Joe Read Mathis (1912 – 1998).
