Born the son of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston Mathis (1846 – 1899) near Pritchett, Texas. Married Delula Alice Carroll (1865 – 1931), their children were Nobel Mathis (1882 – ), Viola Lee Mathis who married Thomas Jefferson Petty Sr. (1883 – 1972), Martha C. Mathis (1884 – 1884), Joseph Glen Mathis (1886 – 1960), W. A. L. Mathis (1887 – 1897), Nora E. Mathis (1890 – 1891), Cora L. Mathis (1890 – 1904), Troy M. Mathis (1891 – 1898), Leslie Mathis (1893 – 1897), Gladys Mathis (1898 – 1969), Clara Mathis (1899 – 1900), Clyde Mathis (1899 – 1905) and Lillian Emile Mathis (1902 – 1977). He owned and operated a Cotton Mill and General Store in Pritchett, Upshur Co., Texas. Biography by: Ron Wade 11 Dec 1935 Obituary: W. H. Mathis, 70, died at his home at Pritchett Tuesday at 5:30 PM. Services were held at Hopewell Wednesday at 3:00 with B.B. Elder officiating and assisted by Rev. Arrington. Mr. Mathis was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and honored and respected citizen of the county. He was engaged in the ginning buiness at Pritchett and Latch many years and only retired this year on account of health. His friendly, kindly manner won him a host of friends wherever he was known. Survived by four children, Mr. Joe Mathis, Mrs. T. J. Petty of Latch, Mrs. Clyde Lowe of Dallas and Mrs. Emil Hume of Dallas, 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Also three brothers, J. H. of Gilmer, Frank of Tyler and Dolph of Latch and two siters, Mrs. Will Catlett of Pritchett and Mrs. J. D. Parker of Latch and a larger number of nieces and nephews including Mrs. Henry Stropp and R. E. Davis, Foy Mathis, Miss Helen Mathis and Virgil Mathis of Gilmer.
