Born the daughter of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston (1846 – 1899), she married Burton Blanton "Burt" Elder (1869 – 1959), and their children were Howard Hedley Elder born 1896, Annie L. Elder (1898 – 1976), Mathis E. Elder (1901 – 1977), Mattie Elder (1904 – 1937, Ella Grace Elder 1907, Geneva Elder (1909 – 1965), Louella Elder born 1912, and Burton B. Elder Jr. born 1915. Her husband was Upshur Co. Superintendent of Schools.
