Born the son of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston Mathis (1846 – 1899), he married 18 Sep 1908 in Gilmer, Upshur Co., Texas to Molly Blanche Turner (1890 – 1982) and their children were Mary Helen Mathis (1912 – 2010) and James Virgil Mathis (1923 – ).
