Born the son of Joseph DeKalb Mathis (1839 – 1905) and Martha Jane Gaston (1846 – 1899) he married Sarah J. Read (1869 – 1920). Their children were Minnie Ella Mathis (1879 – 1975), Myra Mathis (1890 – 1901), Dana Mathis (1896 – ), Tallie L. Mathis (1898 – 1966), Mattie Lee Mathis (1898 – ), Ila M. Mathis (1901 – ), Foy Wallace Mathis (1904 – 1959), Faye Mathis (1904 – 1939), Kendrick C. Mathis (1907 – 1971) and Hildred Mathis (1907 – 1989).
