Bio

Joseph DeKalb Mathis was born 11 JUL 1839 in Hardeman Co., Tennessee and died 24 NOV 1905 in Upshur Co., Tx. In 1850 he was living in Tippah Co., Mississippi and moved with his father William B. Mathis (1808-1867) and mother Martha Ann Fowler Mathis (1819-1847) to Upshur Co., Texas later in 1850. In the Civil War he was a Private in Company D, 10th Texas Cavalry with his father William B. Mathis as Sgt. & brothers William Nicholas Mathis & Jacob Lewis Mathis. On 30 Mar 1865 after the war he married Martha Jane Gaston and they had 10 children, William Henry Mathis 1866 – 1935; John Thomas Mathis 1868 – 1916; Ora Lee Mathis 1870 – 1945; George Burton Mathis 1872 – 1874; Mary Louella Mathis 1874 – 1932; Joseph Emmett Mathis 1876 – 1918; James Hardy Mathis 1878 – 1941; Walter Lewis Mathis 1880 – 1932; Franklin Monroe Mathis 1883 – 1964; and Robert Randolph Mathis 1885 – 1973. After her death he married Mary Elizabeth Steelman 1870- 1926 and they had one additional girl Joe D. Mathis (1905-1979). Apparently she didn't like to have a "boy's" name and just went by "J.D." and most thought she had only initials. Previously he had married a Clementine M. Hill on 2 Feb 1901 who had died by 1903. Joseph DeKalb Mathis was a successful businessman in the Pritchett Community of Upshur County and had a cotton gin business as well as general store in Pritchett and Latch. Biography by: Ron Wade
