Bio

The Wellington Leader February 15, 1979 Lela Maxwell died at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, February 13, in Collingsworth General Hospital, after an extended illness. Born at Wellington April 21, 1902, she was the daughter of the last Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Rankin, early settlers in the county. The family lived for a few years in Arkansas, then returned to Collingsworth County. She attended McLean and Memphis Schools. Her home was at Quail for more than half her life, and for a number of years, she was an employee of the Quail School. Mrs. Maxwell was appointed postmaster at Quail June 22, 1942, and served until her 70th birthday, April 30, 1972. She was honored at a reception given by the Quail Community. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. A. J. Fires and Mrs. Earl Shields of Stinnett; three sons, Kenneth Maxwell, Fred Maxwell and Dean Maxwell of Hooker, OK; four sisters, Mrs. Elbert Watts, Mrs. George Shinn of Lubbock, Mrs. Weldon Lane of Childress, and Mrs. L. E. Brisbin; one brother, Arthur Rankin of Olton; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. *******************************************************
