Mrs. Christine Frances Makovy Rejcek, age 92 of Penelope, died on Good Friday, April 5, 1996 at 6:52 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Center in Waco where she had resided since July 1989. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. April 7 at Kotch Funeral Home in West. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. on April 8 at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Penelope with Father Reinhard Sternemann as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West. Music was provided by her niece Dorothy Rejcek, daughters Lucille Kubala and Wilma Kallus and grandson Jonathan Neslony. Organist was Dorothy Kucera. For the recessional, nephews Anton Rejcek on his accordion, Willie and Leo Rejcek on their trumpets, and Edward Rejcek on his tuba played the Angel Polka for their Aunt Christine, who never liked to leave until the last polka was played and always wanted everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves. Christine was born in Aquilla on February 17, 1904 to Joseph J. and Aloisie Brezik Makovy, Sr., who were immigrants from Moravia, Czechoslovakia and later moved with her family to Abbott, where she grew up. She attended the Brooken School. She married Valentine F. Rejcek on November 7, 1923 in West, and made their home in Penelope where they raised nine children. Mrs. Rejcek’s husband of 32 years preceded her in death on December 2, 1955, along with three sons, Albert Rejcek, Sr. who died in 1980, George Rejcek, Sr. who died in 1981 and Edmund Rejcek who died in 1988. Mrs. Rejcek was a homemaker and a very skilled seamstress known for her beautiful smocking and dressmaking skills. She also worked for many years with her children in the fields chopping and picking cotton for many farmers. In 1964, at the age of 60, after her children were grown, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse and learned to drive at the same time. She worked for Grant-Buie Medical Center in Hillsboro and later at the Hubbard Hospital where she finally retired at age 78 in April, 1981, after 17 years of nursing. These were happy productive years and the family was always told about her wonderful compassionate nursing and she made many friends. Christine was a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Penelope. She also had been a member of the Altar Society and served as president for several years. She constructed many vestments and linens for both Father Korkeil and Father Hruby. She was a member of the K.J.Z.T. and N.C.C.W. After her move to St. Elizabeth’s Center in 1989, she became a member of the Chapel family at Regis-St. Elizabeth Center. Mrs. Rejcek’s surviving children are daughters: Lucille Kubala and husband Louis of Seymour, Wilma Kallus and husband Patrick of Chalk Bluff, Josephine (Jo) Cervenka and husband Robert of Riesel, Bernadette (Bernice) Gerik and husband Edward of San Antonio, and Geraldine (Gerry) Neslony and husband James of Dallas; one son, Lawrence Rejcek and wife Joan of Garland; two daughters-in-law, Bessie Rejcek of West and Delores Rejcek of Ennis; one sister, Willie Mae Makovy of West; 34 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
