Edward L. (Bearkat) Mashek, Sr., age 88, of West, passed away early Friday morning, Sept. 3, 1999 at Hillcrest Medical Center of West. A rosary was recited at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with the Mass of Christian Burial immediately following with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military graveside services followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, conducted by the V.F.W. Post 4819 of West. Mr. Mashek was born on Sept. 19, 1910 in West, the last surviving child of ten children that were born to Joseph and Katherine Mashek. He served his country in the Marine Corp. from 1926 to 1930 and the National Guard from 1944 to 1945. He married Mary Ann Grimm on Jan. 28, 1936 in Tours. She preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 1988. He was a rancher and owner of Bearkat's Package Store in West for over twenty years until he retired in 1972. He was a former Commander of the American Legion #478 of West and a former manager of the American Legion Semi-pro baseball team. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #4819; Knights of Columbus #2305; K.J.T. Society #60 and St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Bearkat was an "avid sportsman and believed in hard work." He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Patti Lynn Lassetter, who died on Nov. 2, 1990. He is survived by a son, Edward L. Mashek, Jr. and wife Paula of Burleson; two daughters, Kay Popp and husband Dan of Arlington and Pat Lassetter and husband Larry of West; six grandchildren, Carol Popp, Julie Popp Winchester, Theresa Keel, Trey Mashek, Larry Lassetter, Jr. and Nick Mashek; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Robert Stanislav, Joe Edd Grimm, Pat Urbis, Sammy Mashek, Joe Mashek and Joe Stanislav. The family received visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
