Rites Held For Former County Commissioner, Jerry Mashek Jerry Mashek, 60, of Route 2, West, a former McLennan County Commissioner, died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday in a Dallas hospital. Mr. Mashek's death followed a long fight with cancer. He was taken from his home to the Dallas hospital over the weekend when his condition worsened. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West. Requiem mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, Rev. Earl Hedberg was celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Mashek was born Feb. 9, 1913, in West and lived there all is life except for service in the military during World War II. He served as county commissioner of Precinct 3 from Jan. 1, 1955 until this year. Grady Calvery defeated him in an election last year. Mr. Mashek departed his post while the county was completely out of debt. Mr. Mashek's first major project for the county was helping to establish Woodland Springs Nursing Home at 1010 Dallas, in Waco. This county home for the elderly has grown from 58 beds to 150 beds. Mr. Mashek said Woodland Springs is widely known as one of the finest nursing homes in the state. Mr. Mashek also was concerned with expanding the sheriff's facilities, adult and juvenile probation departments and services for the mentally ill and the poor. He endorsed and worked for the county courthouse renovations, the new building at Sixth and Jefferson, the improved county jail, new permanent structures at the county's Heart O' Texas fair grounds and other changes. Mr. Mashek built or helped secure black-topped roads for every one of the communities in his precinct. He began replacing small wooden bridges with metal ones and provided ten large concrete bridges. The people in his precinct named one of the roads after him. He resided on Jerry Mashek Drive. Mr. Mashek was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4819, the West American Legion, the Knights of Columbus Council 2305 and the KJT Society No. 31. He married the former Mary Morgan May 17, 1936 in West. He was a star athlete at West High School. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry Mashek of Dallas, Jerry Mashek, Jr., of Irving and Joe Mashek of West; two (daughters), Mrs. Bob (Betty) Ingram of Grand Prairie and Miss Margie Mashek of West; three brothers, Jim Mashek and Ed Mashek, both of West, and John Mashek of Waco; three sisters, Mrs. Christine Stanislav and Mrs. Joe (Mary) Urbish, both of West, and Mrs. Herman (Rosie) Grimm of Tours; and three grandchildren.
