Bio
Mary Katherine "Kay" Mashek was born on October 22, 1937, in West, TX to Edward and Mary Grimm Mashek. Kay was the oldest of three children and is survived by her sister, Patricia Mashek Lassetter and is preceded in death by her brother, Edward Mashek, Jr. Kay graduated as a Registered Nurse from Providence Nursing School in Waco, TX and then moved to Arlington, TX to work at Arlington Memorial Hospital. Kay married Dan Popp of Abbott, TX on October 1, 1961, and they celebrated 59 years of marriage prior to Dan's death in November 2020. In Kay's nearly 50-year nursing career she also worked for Dr. Richard Jernigan, Family Healthcare Associates and Dr. Kyle Talkington. Kay was a nurse not only at work but also in her daily life and often took care of ailing or ill friends and family. Kay loved hosting family gatherings, gardening, decorating for the holidays, a freshly vacuumed carpet, reading and needlework. Her daughters have inherited enough embroidered tea towels to last a lifetime. She made the best Christmas cookies and baked dozens to share each year. She shared Dan's love for travel, Texas backroads, long phone conversations, and the Texas Rangers. Kay is survived by her daughters, Carol Popp and Julie Winchester and her husband, David; and grandchildren, Daniel, Joshua and Sarah Winchester.
