Mary Rose Rejsek was born on 02 May 1916, on the family farm in rural Danube, Renville County, Minnesota, to Albert and Mary Hlavinka Rejsek. She attended rural Danube school. Mary moved to Port Arthur, Texas, where she worked for two years and where she was later joined by her parents and family. In 1938, she moved back to Minnesota. On 25 October 1938, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn, Mary Rose married Matthew “Matt” Jerome Serbus, the son of John William and Mary Ann Kojetin Serbus. Matt was born on 24 February 1904 in Henryville Township near Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota, to John William and Mary Ann Kojetin Serbus Mary and Matt farmed the family farm, where Matt was born, until 1971; when they retired and moved to Olivia where Mary worked at the Olivia Healthcare Center. After retiring from the nursing home to care for her husband, Mary devoted her time to quilting, crocheting, visiting the nursing home residents, and volunteering at her church. Mary and Matt both lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Mary Rose Rejsek Serbus died unexpectedly at the age of 82, on Saturday, 12 September 1998, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Survivors included Mary’s children, Sylvia (Bud) Welsh of Bird Island, Margaret (Tony) Kosak and Mary (Jerry) Schroepfer of Olivia, Wallace (Karen) Serbus of Danube, Larry (Sue) Serbus of Olivia, and Steve (Cheryl) Serbus of New Ulm; son-in-law, Vernon Ewer, of Phoenix, Arizona; 22 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; sisters, Celestine Kucera and Stella (Oscar) Litvik, all of Texas; brothers, Jim (Rita) Rejsek of Redwood Falls and Stanley Rejsek of Texas. Mary Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Matthew; daughter, Leona Agnes Ewer; brothers, Frank and Joe Rejsek; one grandson; and four great-grandchildren. Friends said their final farewells to Mary Rose on Tuesday, 15 September, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dirks Funeral Home in Olivia. There was a rosary at 4:15 and a prayer service at 7:00. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mary Rose Rejsek Serbus on Wednesday, 16 September 1998, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Mary Rose was buried next to her husband, Matthew Jerome, in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota.
