Leona Agnes Serbus was born on 18 January 1943, in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to Matthew William and Mary Rose Rejsek Serbus. She attended School District #12, in Henryville Township, until the school closed in 1954, when she transferred to Olivia Public School. After her high school graduation in 1961, Leona attended and graduated from Minneapolis Business College. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Jay Murray & Associates in Minneapolis as a private secretary. Leona Agnes married Vernon Arthur Ewer of Bird Island on 31 October 1964. They moved to Phoenix in 1966, where Leona was active in the Special Olympics, Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities of Arizona, Girl Scouts, and the Schools for the Deaf in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. Leona worked at Washington Elementary School as a clerk for the lunch program until the time of her death. Leona Agnes Ewer, of Phoenix, Arizona, and formerly of Olivia, Minnesota, died at the age of 54 on 27 November 1997 in Arizona. After a funeral service on 03 December 1997, at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Phoenix, Leona was returned to Olivia, Minnesota, for a memorial service and burial. Leona was survived by her husband; Vernon; son, Mark; and, daughter, Bridget (Kevin) Patterson, all of Phoenix; mother, Mary of Olivia; sisters Sylvia (Bud) Welsh of Bird Island, Margaret (Tony) Kosak, and Mary (Jerry) Schroepfer of Olivia; brothers Wally (Karen) Serbus of Danube, Larry (Sue) Serbus of Olivia, Steve (Cheryl) Serbus of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews. Leona was preceded in death by her father, Matthew Serbus; and, infant son, John David Ewer. There was visitation for Leona on Saturday, 13 December, for one hour prior to a memorial service at the funeral home. The memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, 13 December 1997, at the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia, Minnesota. Burial followed in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Bird Island, Renville County, Minnesota.
