There will be a vigil service Sunday at the funeral home. Robert (Bob) Wegner was 83 years, 6 months of age when he died on October 8, 2003, at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong surrounded by his loving family. Robert Paul Wegner was born April 13, 1920. He was the seventh of fifteen children born to Frank and Emma Wegner, and he often referred to himself as the middle child. Bob and his siblings grew up on a farm north of Armstrong near the shores of Iowa Lake. The Wegner children made up the majority of the students who attended the one room school house in the area. Bob Wegner and Shirley Mart were united in marriage on January 28, 1942, in East Chain, Minnesota. After military duty, the couple resided in Fenton, Iowa, and later moved to a farm on Iowa Lake. They farmed and raised livestock. When the work on the farm was done, he hired out to other farmers with his stock truck and combine. His love of people and the outdoors, particularly fishing, led him and Shirley to open Wegner's Resort on the shores of beautiful Iowa Lake. Many local residents as well as people from across the United States enjoyed staying at the cabins, pitching the tent, boating, fishing and water skiing at the resort. Through the years Bob's own family grew and became his source of joy and happiness. He and Shirley raised four daughters, Barb Nutt, Jan Hansen, Mary Bradley, all who live in the Armstrong area, and Pam Pottorff at Colorado Springs. He was very proud of his two sons, Steve Wegner of Swea City and Kevin Wegner of Estherville. As far as he was concerned his sons and daughter in-laws were his sons and daughters. Those new sons included Doug Nutt, Ron Hansen, Art Bradley and Greg Pottorff. Jane and Peggy Wegner joined the family as daughters. In 1977 Bob and Shirley moved to their home on the Armstrong Golf Course. Bob was employed at the Farmers Elevator, night watchman at Arts Way and worked for many farmers. Bob enjoyed his sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Stricken with cancer twice in his lifetime, Bob taught others how to fight back, maintain a positive attitude, cope with humor, and appreciate what you have. When Bob lost his beloved grandson, Chad, in a motorcycle accident, his wife Shirley in 1998, and his son Steve to cancer in 1999, Bob taught others about perseverance and a love of life. He continued to enjoy simple pleasures like visiting his sisters, card games with his friends, holidays spent with his family, and his ability to build new relationships. (48061084)
