Bio
Gladys L. (Wegner) Mart, the 10th of 15 children of Frank and Emma (Werling) Wegner, was born May 3, 1926, in rural Armstrong, Iowa. She departed this life on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at the Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong at the age of 83. She received her education in a rural Armstrong one room school, where the Wegner children made up the majority of the students. On February 14, 1944, Gladys was united in marriage to Clinton Mart in Armstrong. The couple farmed northeast of Armstrong for 35 years. In 1983, they retired and moved into Armstrong to make their home. She was employed at the East Side Cafe for many years. She started and organized the Sunday morning benefit breakfast at the VFW in Armstrong. She was known for her great dill pickles, often canning over 200 quarts every summer. She never turned down a chance to play cards with family and friends. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Armstrong and also a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. Left to cherish Gladys' memory are her husband of 65 years, Clinton of Armstrong; her children, Roger Mart and his wife, Delores of Carlos, Minnesota; Bill Mart and his wife, Mabel of Cleburne, Texas; Tom Mart and his wife, Krista of Armstrong; Randy Mart and his wife, Paula of Armstrong; Beverly Boever and her husband, Walt of Armstrong; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Florence Pytleski and Lillian Johnson both of Fairmont and Velda Sathoff, Dorothy Johnson and Don Wegner all of Armstrong. Preceding Gladys in death were a son, Joseph; her parents; brothers, Clyde, Earl and Robert Wegner; and sisters, Luella Hanson, Norma Jorgensen, Pearl Borowiak, Fern Nawrocki, Arlene Wegener and Jean Sathoff.
