Bio

Susan Catherine (Cathrine) Phillips was born 11 December 1834 in Greenville, South Carolina. She was 2nd of the 10 children born to Stephen B Phillips (1810-1898) and Juliet Hawkins Phillips (1813-1891). Siblings: John Wesley Phillips (1832-1904), Mary Elizabeth Phillips [Mitchell] (1837-1858), Edward Stephen Phillips (1839-1922), William Theador Phillips (1842-1921), Sarah Sopshire Phillips [Chesnutt] (1845-1918), Caroline Sophrona Phillips [Meyers] (1845-1903), Emily Jane Phillips [Fowler] (1850-1893), George Washington Phillips (1853-1925) and Robert Perry Phillips (1856-1939). She married James Marion Burk about 1854 in Tennessee. They were the parents of Mary Jane Burk [Wright] (1855-1939), Sarah A. Burk (1858-died between 1860 and 1870), James Franklin Burk (1861-1931), William Marion Burk (1870-1941), Robert [Bob] Perry Burk (1874-1944), Samuel Houston Burk (1875-1930) and Thomas Jefferson Burk (1880-1960). She and her husband James moved from Tennessee to Texas around 1859. The 1860 Census Record shows James and Susan living in Texas with their two daughters, Mary Jane Burk and Sarah A. Burk. Their sons were all born in Texas. After James died in 1900, Susan Catherine went to live with her son Robert and his family. She lived with them until her death on 23 Jan 1914 in Bristol, Ellis, Texas. She is buried in the Bristol Cemetery in Bristol, Ellis, Texas.
