Sarah Sopshire Phillips was born 15 October 1845 in Greenville County, South Carolina, she was 6th of the 10 children born to Stephen B. Phillips and Juliet Hawkins Phillips. Siblings: John Wesley Phillips (1832-1904), Susan Catharine Phillips [Burk] (1834-1914), Mary Elizabeth Phillips [Mitchell] (1837-1858), Edward Stephen Phillips (1839-1922), William Theador Phillips (1842-1921), Caroline Sophrona Phillips [Meyers] (1845-1903), Emily Jane Phillips [Fowler] (1850-1893), George Washington Phillips (1853-1925) and Robert Perry Phillips (1856-1939). She married James Henry Chesnutt on 5 June 1862 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. They were the parents of Mary Ella [Chesnutt] Fuqua (1866-1942), Hugh Edward Chesnutt (1868-1923), John Stephan Chesnutt (1875-1952) and Maude Emma [Chesnutt] Norman (1880-1947). Her husband passed away in 1908 and shortly thereafter she moved in with her daughter Maude and her husband William Norman.
