William Theador Phillips was born 4 December 1842 in Greenville, South Carolina. He was 5th of the 10 children born to Stephen B. Phillips and Juliet Hawkins. Siblings: John Wesley Phillips (1832-1904), Susan Catharine Phillips [Burk] (1834-1914), Mary Elizabeth Phillips [Mitchell] (1837-1858), Edward Stephen Phillips (1839-1922), Sarah Sopshire Phillips [Chesnutt] (1845-1918), Caroline Sophrona Phillips [Meyers] (1845-1903), Emily Jane Phillips [Fowler] (1850-1893), George Washington Phillips (1853-1925) and Robert Perry Phillips (1856-1939). He made his living as a farmer as did his father. On 3 December 1865 he was married to Cynthia J. Rogers in Bradley County, Tennessee. They were the parents of 10 children: Walter H. Phillips (1868 - 1946), Oscar Phillips (1871 - 1943), Henagar Phillips (1873-1936), James Phillips (1878-1939), Robert W. Phillips (1881), William Phillips (1883-1945), Ethel E. Phillips (1885), Julia M. Phillips (1888) and Roxie Ellen Phillips [Thatch] (1890 - 1969). He passed away 27 Nov 1921 just one week short of his 79th birthday in Apison, Hamilton, Tennessee.
