Joseph Charles Jaska was born in Kasava near Zlin in Moravia (now the Czech Republic). His parents, Josef and Florentina, moved with Charles and sister Julia and younger brother Jindrich from Moravia to better farmland in Rovisce Croatia where two more siblings, Alois (Louis) L. and Alouise (Louise) were born. In 1902, Joseph's cousin, John Nemecek of West wrote and told him that he needed a trained butcher. Joseph, who was a school trained butcher, and his older sister Julia emigrated to America arriving in Galveston, Texas in 1903. On his trip, he met the Jan Hejl family, to include his future wife Anastazie. Joseph worked for the next two years at Nemecek's Meat Market thus paying for his passage to America. Afterwards, he worked for several Texas meat processors until he was able to marry and buy his own farm. Over the next number of years, he and Anastazie raised most of their nine children into adulthood. In 1935 he became ill and deteriorated further during 1936 and subsequently died in 1936 at the relatively young age of 51. His impact with his family and community was immense. He recognized hard work and learning the English language would be rewarded in his new adopted country. His children also recognized the value of hard work and education to improve their lives and that of their children. Joseph and his siblings were able to bring their parents Josef and Florentina from Czechoslovakia to Texas where they lived into old age, but dearly missed the old country.
