Bessie (Bess) Jaska Hlavaty, devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on December 31, 1997 at her home in Abbott. A rosary was recited at 10 a.m. January 3, 1998 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott by the Rev. Steve Nesrsta. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:15 a.m. January 3 with the Rev. Steve Nesrsta as celebrant, and the Rev. Al Metzger assisting. Burial followed at St. Marys Cemetery near West. Of Czech heritage, Bess was born to Joseph and Anastasia Hejl Jaska on February 18, 1915 in Tokio. She attended Tokio School, St. Marys School, West High School, Treadwell School, classes at Texas A&M College and, in later years, courses at Hill Junior College. She married Ernest Hlavaty on November 17, 1936 and together they started their Hill County farm that Bess enjoyed until the end of her life. For years, Bess and Ernest contributed many hours of service to the Abbott church, school and community. After Ernests death in December 1954, Bess persevered in raising their three daughters, running their farm, and pursuing her education in nursing and art. In 1956, Bess began her professional nursing career at the Hillsboro Clinic where she earned her license, scoring a record high in the clinics history on the State Vocational Nursing Exam. She then enjoyed a 30 year career with the Childrens Clinic in Waco, primarily as nurse to Dr. Charles Shellenberger. In later years, she greatly appreciated the respect and friendship shown by many former patients and their parents. Always interested in seeing new places and meeting new people, Bess encouraged her children and grandchildren to do the same. In 1990, Bess fulfilled her life-long dream of visiting her parents homeland Czechoslovakia. In addition to her early contributions to the Abbott church, school and community, Bess was a long-time and active member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Altar Society, Quilters for Christ, KJZT, Catholic Daughters of America, Czech Heritage Society, ACIO, and Ross Family and Community Education Club, serving in various capacities in all of these organizations. Bess was an avid reader, a gifted and creative artist and seamstress, an unwavering advocate of education who influenced many to pursue higher education, a staunch supporter of youth activities, a source of great wisdom and inspiration, and a caring friend to many. These attributes reflected her belief that life should be lived, All for the Greater Honor and Glory of God. In spite of many hardships, Bess lived her life with dignity, strength and true enjoyment. The family received visitors from 6-8 p.m. January 2 at the funeral home. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
