Fort Bend Herald, July 21, 2019: Nell Rose Garrett went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 11, 2019 at the age of 95. She lived a long, wonderful, and eventful life. She packed everything she could into those 95 years and left this world with little left undone or unsaid. Nell Rose was born in Needville on February 15, 1924 to Paul (Sr.) and Meta Kueck Bettin. She was the 12th child of 14. Her family was in the cotton farming business and she quit school after the 8th grade to help pick cotton, cook meals, and support her family. As a young adult she moved to Rosenberg and began what ended up being her lifelong career as a waitress. She was a favorite at all the restaurants that employed her, including The Ideal Café, Bill Williams, Walter Lewis, and The Richmond Drive In (known for The World's Best Enchiladas). Customers would follow her wherever she worked and request her as their server. Family was everything to her and she loved them fiercely. She was passionate about many things, but her family was at the top of her list always. She loved to cook and was known for her wonderful dishes, especially her lemon meringue pie. Second to cooking she loved to dance and did so right up to age 91. When she danced, heads would turn and she and her dance partner would steal the show! Perhaps what she is best known for was her contagious laugh. You could not meet her and not be drawn in to the positive vibes she elicited. Life dealt her some pretty difficult situations and she could have become bitter and sad; however, she chose happiness. She was the original 'Lucille Ball' and could turn lemons into lemonade better than anyone around. Nell Rose was a long time member of the First Baptist Church Rosenberg where she was loved well by the Women 2 Sunday School class. The family would like to extend its deep appreciation to FBC for the love and kindness they bestowed upon the family since moving back to Rosenberg in 1971. She is survived by her three daughters, Virginia Paschal of Katy, Debra Garrett of Sugar Land, and Cindy Zdunkewicz and husband, Gary, of Bryan; grandsons, Brian Paschal of Katy, Kyle Zdunkewicz and wife, Krystal, of Arlington, and Jeremy Zdunkewicz and wife, Madeline, of San Antonio; a great-grandson, Noah Zdunkewicz of Arlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Combined Glory Assisted Living who provided excellent care and personal attention to her for almost 5 years. A memorial service will be held on July 27 at 11:00 a.m., First Baptist Church, Rosenberg. Dr. Donnie Melton will officiate. The family will receive guests immediately following the service.
