CROFTON, Neb. | Emil H. Plantenberg, 92, of North Sioux City, formerly of Crofton, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton, with the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Friday the church in Crofton. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. Emil Henry Plantenberg was born on June 14, 1920, in Crofton, to Fred and Mary (Ortmeier) Plantenberg. He grew up and attended school in Crofton. Emil was a millwright and worked on the dam construction at Gavins Point, Oahe and Big Bend. He married Lavina Elizabeth Hegge on Aug. 25, 1947, in Crofton. They lived in Pierre, S.D., in 1956 and Chamberlain, S.D., in the 1960s, and then Sioux City in 1966. Emil spent the last 20 years working at Port Neal in Sioux City, retiring in 1982 from the Carpenters Union. He and Lavina then moved to Crofton in 1982. Lavina died on July 10, 2007, at Park View Haven Nursing Home at the age of 79 years. Emil moved to North Sioux City in 2009. Emil is survived by nine children and their spouses, Norma Colt of Sioux City, Diane Meacham of Reno, Nev., Norman and Lois Plantenberg of Sergeant Bluff, Merle and Kay Plantenberg of Grand Island, Neb., Rita Gill and her friend, Larry Beaty of Sergeant Bluff, Kenny and Patty Plantenberg of Crofton, Marcia and Steve Gubbels of Randolph, Neb., Lisa and Jerry Collins of Sioux City, and Kevin and Bev Plantenberg of North Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Plantenberg of Lincoln, Neb.; 30 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavina; four sons, Roger, Danny, Donny, and Keith Plantenberg; sons-in-law, Bill Gill and Ted Colt; and three grandsons, Tim Colt, Greg Meacham, and Mark Plantenberg. Pallbearers will be Brad Colt, Tony Plantenberg, Jeremy Plantenberg, Kyle Frye, Gary Plantenberg, and Michael Plantenberg. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
