Anna Hattie Goblisch was born in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, on 28 February 1880, to Michael "Mike" and Katharina "Katherine" Weis Goblirsch. Anna attended rural country school and completed the fifth grade. She was the sixth of ten children. Her sisters were: Mary (Singer), Katherine "Katrina" (Heger), Barbara (Martineau), Margareta "Maggie" (Arnold), and Bertha (Wacek); and her brothers were: Joseph "Joe," John, Michael "Mike," and Francis "Frank" Goblirsch. Joseph and Michael, and their families, later changed the spelling of their name to "Goblish." Anna married James Peter Hopman, the son of Petrus and Elizabeth Bruinenberg, on 28 September 1903, in St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia, Minnesota. It should be noted that Anna's name was spelled "Goblisch" on her marriage certificate. After their marriage, Anna and James farmed in Troy Township. The 1920, 1930, and 1935 U.S. Census showed them farming, and raising cattle and grain, in rural Graceville Township in Big Stone County, Minnesota. Anna and James had seven sons and five daughters: Alfred born in 1904, Salvia was born in 1906 and she died in 1908, Arthur was born in 1907, Elizabeth (Stohosky) born in 1909, Lillian (Thompson) born in 1911, Dehlia (Fischer) born in 1912, Clarence born in 1913, Madonna (Bosvelt) born in 1915, Kenneth born in 1916, Leo born in 1919, a son who was stillborn in 1920, and another son in 1922. In 1934, Anna suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed for the remainder of her life. And, in 1936, the Hopman family moved to Portland, Clackamas County, Oregon, where James and his sons worked in the Oregon ship yards. Anna Hattie Goblisch Hopman lived in the St. Agnes Home for the Aged, in Oregon City, Clackamas County, Oregon, for the last four years of her life. On 10 September 1950, at the age of 70, Anna suffered another stroke, and died at the Home. Her death certificate says she died from pneumonia, hypostasis, cardiovascular disease, and old age. Anna was survived by her children, Alfred, Arthur, Elizabeth, Lillian, Dehlia, Clarence, Madonna, Kenneth, and Leo; and, she was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, and two stillborn sons. Anna was buried next to her husband, James, in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
