Whitney Messenger 1946 LAST RITES HELD HERE MONDAY FOR JOSEPH W. SHELLEY Joseph Williams Shelley, a resident of Hill County and the Whitney Community for the past 53 years, passed away at the family home at 12:10 o'clock Sunday afternoon, October 6, aged 85 years. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. V. E. Wolbor, assisted by Rev. F. E. Weller, interment was in Fort Graham cemetery under the direction of Marshall and Marshall funeral home. Active pallbearers were grandsons as follows: Gerald Shelley, Darrell Shelley, Billy Shelley, Douglas Shelley, William Stansberry, and Lawrence Stansberry. Flower girls were seven granddaughters. Mr. Shelley was a native of Georgiaand was born Jan. 15,1861. He came to Texas in 1893, locating in Fort Graham and had lived in the Whitney vicinity ever since. He married to Miss Sarah Jane Caughron 55 years ago. Mr Shelley united with the church at the age of 16 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitney were he had served as a decon for many years. Survivors are his widow, one brother Z.W. Shelley of Lubbock, six sons; W.A., J.D. and R.H. Shelley all of Whitney, A.H. of Brawley, Calif., J. E. of Peacock and L.O. of Itasca; two daughters Mrs. J.D. Barnes and Mrs. J.L. Stansberry of Whitney; 32 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
