Whitney, Hill County, Texas Obituary Whitney Messenger Thursday January 6, 1938 John Henry Shelley was born at Canton, Georgia, October 22, 1855, and departed this life at his home one half mile north of Whitney at 6:40 a.m. January 3, 1938, aged 82 years, two months and 12 days. Mr. Shelley was married to Miss Nancy Margaret Wooten on December 19, 1878, in Lumpkin County, Georgia. To this union were born nine children, four girls and five boys, two of whom preceded their father in death, one in infancy, the other at the age of eleven years. Besides his wife he leaves the following children to mourn his death: Ernest Shlley, Petersburg, Texas; T.H. Shelley, Raisin City, Calif.; W.H. Shelley of SanAntonio; T.O. Shelley of Gorman; Mrs. Ethel Barker, of Comanche; Mrs Octave Cierley, Fresno, Calif.; Mrs. Jewel Parks, Dos Palos, Calif.. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and five brothers and three sisters: J.M. Shelley, Waco; J.W. Shelley, Whitney; Z.W. Shelley f Lubbock; A. B. of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; A.J. (Hanse) of Huron; Mrs. Vannie Suitor, Gravette, Arkansas; Mrs. Jane Woods of Gilliland; Mrs. Lula Thompson of Peggs,Oklahoma. Mr. Shelley proffered faith in Christ at an early age, uniting with the Baptist Church of Huron, later moving his membership to Whitney where it had since remained . Mr. Shelley was a faithful husband and devoted father, never ceasing in his efforts to assist his fellow man. Now he is gone; but not forgotten, Now he is gone; ne'er to return, But someday we all shall meet him in a better home above. Funeral services for Mr. Shelley were held at the family residence at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, conducted by Revs. V. M. Cloyd of Waco and Arthur Johnson of Whitney. Interment was in Bethlehem Cemetery, arrangements i charge of Marshall and Marshall. Pallbearers were: W. A. Winkleman, Dudley Dodson, Gus Boesch, Harry Sims, A. M. Hampton and W. H. Roundtree. Shelley of Fresno, California; Mrs. Catherine Jackman and sister, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Wooten, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Wooten, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Wooten, Mr. and Mrs. Velt Wooten, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Harvey of Hillsboro; G. R. Priddy, Itasca; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Shelley, Osceola; Rev. V. M. Cloyd, Waco.
