Bio

Sarah Ellen "Sis" Smith first married Henry Brock on January 6, 1861, in Hortense, Polk County, Texas. They were the parents of three sons: John Henry Brock (born 1862); Esra E. Brock (1864-1919) and George Goodwin Brock (1866-1892). Henry Brock died June 8, 1866; two months before the birth of their youngest son. After being widowed 10 years, Aunt Sis married a widower, Minityre Nicholas, on February 22, 1877, in Polk County. Aunt Sis and Mr. Nicholas eventually settled near Boyd, in Wise County, Texas, in the early or mid-1880s. Aunt Sis and Mr. Nicholas were still living in Wise County in 1900 but sometime afterwards, Mr. Nicholas' children came and moved him to Lovelady, Texas. Aunt Sis then apparently made her home with her son, E. E. Brock when he moved to Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1905. The 1920 census shows Aunt Sis and two of her sisters, Aunt Jane Coker and Aunt Dollie Dittmore, living in the home of a niece, Ether Griffin Cotten, in Polk County. Aunt Sis died in the home of her only grandson, Arthur Brock, in Stephens County, Oklahoma. OBITUARY FROM THE MARLOW REVIEW, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1926 MRS. SARAH ELLEN NICHOLS DEAD Mrs. Sarah Ellen Nichols, grandmother of Arthur Brock of this city, died at Mr. Brock's home Wednesday, February 17th at 7 A.M. Mrs. Nichols was 83 years, 6 months and 25 days old. Mrs. Nichols' maiden name was Smith. She was born in Talaposa County, Alabama, July 21, 1842. In 1856 her parents moved to Livingston in Polk County, Texas. Miss Smith married Henry W. Brock in 1860. In 1866 she was left a widow with three children. Mrs. Brock was married to Mr. Mentre Nichols in 1872. Mr. Nichols died September 2, 1906. All of Mrs. Nichols' three children are dead. Mr. Arthur Brock is her only grandchild. Mrs. Nichols is survived by five sisters and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She was a life-long Baptist. The remains will be laid to rest in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Boyd, Texas. *********************************************************************************** Sarah Ellen "Aunt Sis" Nicholas was preceded in death by her parents, Seaborn & Elizabeth Goodwin Smith; her first husband, Henry Brock in 1866; her second husband, Minityre Nicholas in 1906; her three sons, John Henry Brock, Esro E. Brock, and George Goodwin Brock; her only granddaughter, Exer May Brock; and her four brothers, John Porter Smith, William H. "Bill" Smith; Seaborn Thadeas Smith and J. Monroe Smith.
