Bio

John Porter Smith was the son of Seaborn Smith and Elizabeth Goodwin Smith. He married Nancy Jane Beard on June 27, 1865, in Polk Co., Tx. They were the parents of 10 children; six of whom lived to adulthood. John Porter Smith served in Co. K, 5th Texas Infantry, Hood's Brigade, CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. ~~~~~~~~ From the book, THERE WERE NEVER SUCH MEN BEFORE, by Miss Ruth Peebles: JOHN PORTER SMITH enlisted August 24, 1861, in Livingston, Texas, as a private in COMPANY K, 5th TEXAS INFANTRY, HOOD'S BRIGADE. He gave his residence as Livingston, Polk County, Texas, and his occupation as a farmer. John P. Smith was wounded in the neck in Gaines Mill, Virginia on June 27, 1862. He was detailed as a teamster in February 1863. He received a slight wound at Spottsylvania, Virginia--a mine ball in foot--in May 1864. He was treated in Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, in June 1864 and again in October 1864. John P. Smith's name is not shown on the surrender at Appomattox. ************ The family story is that when John Porter Smith returned to his family home in Polk County, Texas, he must have been a sight to behold. Before his mother would allow him in the house, he had to strip out of his ragged, dirty clothes. He was then given a hot bath and scrubbed down thoroughly and then given a fresh change of clothes. Afterwards, he was allowed in the house.
