Nancy Elizabeth "Bettie" Smith was the daughter of Seaborn and Elizabeth Goodwin Smith. She married John Israel Canon on Dec. 31, 1882, in Polk Co., Tx. They were married in the home of Bettie's father, Seaborn Smith, and they were married by the Rev. Frank Wilson. Their witnesses were J. J. Beaty and Missie Smith. John I. and Nancy E. "Bettie" Canon lived most of their married life in Polk County. In 1899-1900, the Canons were living in Liberty County, Texas, and in 1908-1911, the Canons were living in Chambers County, Texas. The Canon Family moved back to Polk County from Chambers County where they lived just east of Livingston. On Dec. 20, 1918, John I. Canon purchased 24-acres on the Old Woodville Road. The 1920 Federal Census shows John I. Canon as a truck farmer. The Canon Family had lived on this property as renters for several years before purchasing this farm. After her husband's death in 1920, Bettie Canon continued to live in Polk County until the marriage of her son, Monroe Canon, in 1924. Afterwards, Bettie Canon moved to the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Arrilla & Robert F. "Bob" Oates, in Goose Creek in Harris County, Texas. Bettie Canon made her home with the Oates Family for the rest of her life when she wasn't visiting in the homes of her sons and other relatives. Bettie Canon sold her home and property in Polk County to her son, Albert Canon, on November 30, 1926. In October 1933, Bettie Canon moved with the Oates Family to Dayton, in Liberty County, Texas, and she was a Dayton resident until her death. Nancy E. "Bettie" Smith Canon was the mother of eight children: six sons and two daughters. ********************************************************************************* OBITUARY FROM THE DAYTON NEWS: Funeral Services for Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Canon, 84, who died Tuesday morning in Dayton in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Arrilla Oates, were held at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning in the Carroll Fisher Funeral Chapel, Beaumont.
