Charles was born in Henderson, Sibley County, MN according to his baptismal certificate from Henderson. His parents were Julius and Paulina Lemke who were Prussian immigrants who had moved first to Iowa, then sold their farm in Iowa and went north, first to Minnesota, but by the time Charles was 3, they had begun homesteading in Taylor County, Wisconsin. Most of the homesteaders in Taylor County would farm most of the year and log in the winter to make cash for their farms. Charles' father, Julius, was logging at a camp when a tragic logging accident killed him in 1889. Charles was only 7 years old when his father was killed and his mother was taken away for being unable to cope, their belongings sold at auction and the eight children "scattered" among families in the area who would take them in exchange for work. In the US Census for 1900, "Charlie" was living in Browning Town as a lodger working in a logging camp in Taylor, WI, said he was born May 1882 in MN and that his parents had been born in Germany. In the US Census for 1910 Charles Lamke (changed the name because there was another Charles Lemke in the area) was living in Aitkin County, MN as a single 26 year old lodger who was listed as born in WI with parents born in US. (Did the landlady provide the information while Charles was at work?) This landlady became his mother-in-law on 20 Dec 1909 when Charles married Pearl Nix in Aitken County. After Charles and Pearl got married, he said it took 3 days to drive the horse and buggy from Aitkin to Palisade to the farm according to Jeanette because there were no roads. Charles liked to fish, hunt and trap in his free time when he wasn't farming. He was talented with his hands and his rifle and passed these talents on to his children. Charles and Pearl had 14 children on that farm in Palisade. In the 1920 census Charles Lamke was 37, married, born in MN, parents born in Germany. and was a farmer. Wife was Pearl 29, b. WA, her father born in MI, her mother in Canada. Children were Charles Philip 9, born MN, Ruby M. 7, Myrtle L. 5, Melvin D. 3 and Archie H. 1 all born in MN.
