Bio

Amiel was born in Turza, Exin Parish,(now in Poland) and brought to the US when he was a baby by his parents, Julius and Paulina Lemke who settled first in Iowa and later homesteaded in Taylor County, Wisconsin. Amiel was a teenager when his father who logged in the winter to make cash for his farm, was killed in a tragic logging accident, his mother was taken to a hospital because she couldn't cope, his family belongings were auctioned off, and he and his siblings "farmed out" to local homes who would take them in, feed and clothe them in exchange for free labor. Amiel hopped a train and left Wisconsin moving out to Washington State. Listed as Amiel Lemke on 1880 census, age 7. Found in sister, Bertha's, Bible as "Aimel" Lemke b. 13 Mar. 1870. Known by relatives in Wisconsin as Emil Lemke. --WA Death Index: Amiel Lamke, age 72, d. 16 Jan 1945 in Seattle. Certificate: 263. In addition,found listed in the 1920 & 1930 U.S. Censuses on Ancestry.com as follows: --1920 U.S. Census. Indexed as Anriel Lamke. --1930 U.S. Census. indexed as Amiel Lamke. In 1920 "Anriel" was a shingle weaver in a shingle mill, widower age 50, living as a lodger in Seattle. Archie L. Lamke, Machinist, b. in Washington, age 25, and Oral A. Lamke, age 20, single, a marine fireman with him as lodgers. In 1930 Amiel was a wooden pipe fitter livng as a lodger on Ballard Ave, age 63, from Germany, naturalized and immigrated in 1873. Amiel's death certificate says that he died in a hospital in Seattle of a bowel infarction, also had brochial pneumonia. It said that he had come to Washington at age 17 and was a widower and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Seattle and had been a pipe fitter by trade.Settle Post Intelligencer, Thursday 18 Jan 1945 p. 17 Newspaper Death Notice: LAMKE, AMIEL 4334 W Dawson St. Father of Alberta Otis, Everett, WA, Archie L Lamke, Seattle, brother of Mrs. Bertha Sands, Sand Point, ID and John Lemke, Medford, WI; also 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Services Friday,2 p.m. West Home Chapel. In addition, married to Lois Maud Bennett on 27 Jan 1894 in Snohomish County, Washington. Lois was born 26 Nov 1876 in Wood, WI and died 12 Feb 1914 in Spokane. They must have divorced because Lois married John Edward Lee Dec. 3, 1909 in Everett, Snohomish. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Everett, Snohomish County.
