Herman Lemke was born in Jefferson Township, Bremer County, IA on a farm belonging to his parents, Julius and Paulina Noeske Lemke who were recent immigrants from Province of Posen in the Kingdom of Prussia. He was later brought by his parents to a homestead in Chelsea, Taylor, WI. Herman's father died in a tragic logging accident when Herman was 11. His mother was taken away, their family belongings sold at auction and he and his siblings individually given to local people who would feed and clothe them in return for work. Herman was given to a mean family who treated him badly. Herman and his brother, John, vowed not to run, but to stay together in Medford until they were old enough to be on their own. Herman was shorter, quieter and more intense than his brother, John. Herman then married a local girl, the only child of a farm family, and farmed her farm after her father died.
