The Star News, Medford, Taylor, WI March 26, 1959. By all accounts, John, was outgoing and loved most to hunt and fish. He never talked about his up-bringing. John was born in Iowa to Julius & Paulina (Neske) Lemke, who were recent immigrants from Prussia. When John was just 13 his father was killed in a logging accident and his mother taken away. He and his siblings were scattered among local people who took them in as unpaid help and their education was stopped. Somehow, however, John was able to hold on to the homesteaded farm property. He married Mary Steen, the closest neighbor, and became part of her household along with Mary's widowed mother. He farmed the property most of his life.
