Bio

Julius was born in Turzyn, Exin, Prussia (Panigrodz, now Kcynia, Poland)and was a cavalry uhlan for the Kaiser. Julius and Pauline married in Gollantsche Parish, Poland on Feb 7, 1864 and after his father, Johann Friedrich Lemke, died in Turzyn, Exin parish, Prussia on Dec 20, 1871, immigrated with their two sons, Eduard (b. 1870) and Amiel (b. 1872), about 1872-1874. (The couple had also twin girls, Rosalia and Josepha, Oct 27, 1867 who died 2 days later and a stillborn child in 1868.) All 5 of these children were born in Graplewo, Exin parish, Prussia. They moved first to Bremer County, Iowa. In August of 1874, daughter, Bertha, was born in Bremer County, Iowa. In May of 1876, son,John Julius, was born. In Feb 1878, son, Herman was born in Iowa. In 1880, according to the US Census, the family farmed in Jefferson Township, Bremer Co., Iowa which was where daughter, Minnie, was born in September of 1880. The parents were 37, Edward was 9, Emil 7, John was 4 and Herman was 2. Julius decided to sell that farm and move on. Son, Charles, was born in Henderson, Sibley Co., MN in May of 1882. In 1885 Julius was homesteading in Chelsea, Taylor County, WI with ten in the family according to the Wisconsin state census. In Nov of that year, daughter,Emma, was born. In February of 1889, a tragic accident at the Kennedy logging camp occurred where Julius was a supervisor and Julius' foot was crushed. He got blood poisoning and around the first of March, two doctors amputated his foot at the log house where the family lived. Newspaper accounts were first that he was recovering, then in a later newspaper, that he had died. According to his probate records, he died May 3, 1889. The County sold their belongings at an auction. The children were "scattered" to different farm families who would take them, each separately as workers. Emma, the youngest, was sent to an orphanage in Sparta, where she was adopted. Pauline, the mother, was sent to the Dunn County Poor House and Home for the Insane in Menomonie, Dunn Co, WI when she couldn't cope with the tragedy. Julius was buried in an unmarked grave at Chelsea where the family lived. Paulina died at age 82 and the children, then adults, paid to have her body brought to Medford for burial. In 2009 a grandson, Dennis Lamke, created a marker for Julius with help from nephews who are still loggers in Minnesota, and placed it on his grave in Chelsea.
