In Nov of that year, their last child, Emma, was born. In February of 1889, a tragic accident at the Kennedy logging camp occurred and Julius's foot was crushed. He got blood poisoning and around the first of March, two doctors amputated his foot. According to his probate records, he died May 3, 1889. The children were "scattered" to different farm families who would take them, each separately. Pauline went into the Dunn County Poor House and Home for the Insane when she couldn't cope.
