HERMAN LEMKE, 76, ORIGINAL MEDFORD MOTORS OWNER, DIES Herman A. Lemke, 76, town of Medford, one of the original co-owners of Medford Motors, died Monday evening at Memorial hospital, Medford, where he had been hospitalized the past four days. Funeral services will be held here at 1:30 p.m. today, Thursday, at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church with Rev. Warren Behling officiating. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery. The body lay in state at the Hemer Funeral home, Medford. The family requests memorials be designated to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mr. Lemke was born Jan 25, 1902 at Interwald and received his education there and at the old Thiele school. At an early age he did woodwork and in 1919 began an apprenticeship here with an early Ford dealer, the former Fleming Motor Co., Kiger's Motors, another early Ford dealer in Medford. In June of 1944 Mr. Lemke, Alfred Thielke and the late W.J. Smith purchased the Ford agency franchise from H.G. Kiger and established Medford Motors on the present site of Bauer's Bus Depot. The three members of the firm had been employed by Kiger for several years. Lemke in charge of the shop and parts department since 1933, Thielke as head of the body department since 1934, Smith as manager since 1939. The three co-owners decided to construct a new building in June of 1947 when A. W. Mundt purchased from Brintker and Hug the building at the corner of Wisconsin avenue and State street in which Medford Motors was located. Erection of the new garage, located at its present site on the corner of Wisconsin avenue and W. Broadway, was started July 16, 1947 and the formal opening was held January 16, 1948 at which time Mr. Lemke was serving as supervisor of the parts department. Thielke as service manager and Smith as general manager. Mr. Lemke co-owned and co-operated the business until 1957 when he sold his interest to Harold Pernsteiner. He then went into mink ranching until his retirement in 1966. He was married to Francis Annen, who preceded him in death June 6, 1942. He marriage to June Schneider, who survives, took place August 2, 1943 at Hartland. Mr. Lemke was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church. In addition to this wife, he is survived by three daughters, Betty, Mrs. Joe Prohaska, Medford, Rita, Mrs. Rodney Warner, Mosinee, and Sherin, Mrs. Robert Bowen, Stevens Point; three sons, Dave, co-owner of Medford Motors, and Franklin, both of Medford, and Russell, Mosinee, 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Two brothers also preceded him in death.
